New brain implants are designed to assist people who have lost the ability to speak due to a stroke or illness. Two research groups in California have recently achieved a breakthrough.
ALS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is an incurable neurodegenerative disease. Patients gradually lose control over their muscles and often eventually become unable to speak. A research team at Stanford University in California is collaborating with an ALS patient to further develop and test her brain implant. The implant aims to restore the ability to speak for her and others facing similar challenges.
